NAC Athletes of the Week (Week Ending April 16)

Baseball

Player of the Week - Sam Huston, Husson (So., C/INF - Bangor, Maine)

Huston helped the Eagles go 4-3 on the week (4-2 in NAC action), playing first against Saint Joseph's (Maine), third versus Thomas and finished out the week behind the plate at New England College. On the week, the sophomore hit .421 (8-for-19), while recording 10 RBI, eight runs, eight walks, three doubles, and one homerun. In the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Thomas, Huston went 2-for-4, earned six RBI, scored three runs and belted a grand slam in the top of the sixth. The infielder went 1-for-1 in game two, as he scored two runs, drew two walks, and hit one double. In a four-game series that the Eagles split with NEC, he went 3-for-9, tallied four RBI, scored two runs, earned two doubles and drew six walks. Defensively, Huston recorded 36 putouts and four assists on 42 total chances. 

 

 

 

Pitcher of the Week - Vincent Backert, New England College (Sr., P/3B - Shelton, Conn.)

Backert recorded a shutout in his lone start on the mound this past week. The Pilgrims claimed a 5-0 win over Husson, as the senior threw a complete-game, scattering two hits, allowing one walk, and striking out eight batters.

 

 

 

Rookie of the Week - Logan Rogerson, Husson (Fr., SS - Brewer, Maine)

Rogerson helped Husson go 4-3 on the road, sweeping Thomas and splitting four games with NEC in conference action. The shortstop hit .462 (12-for-26), scored 11 runs, earned three RBI, drew three walks, and stole one base. The rookie finished out the week strong in the team's final three games versus NEC hitting 11-for-13, as he went 4-for-4, 4-for-5 and 3-for-4. He also tallied eight scored runs, three RBI, one walk and one stolen base against the Pilgrims.

Player of the Week - Sean Largay, New England College (Sr., A - Norwalk, Conn.)

Largay was the Pilgrim's best offensive threat in a 1-1 week, as he posted nine goals, one assist, and six ground balls. The senior scored six goals and had an assist in a win over Husson. Earlier in the week, he was NEC's top scorer with a hat-trick in NEC's tough loss to Plymouth State.

 

 


Defensive Player of the Week
Connor Fries, New England College (So., LSM - Barnstable, Mass.)

Fries scooped up 12 ground balls and caused six turnovers in a 1-1 week for NEC. The sophomore tallied four ground balls and four caused turnovers in the team's loss to Plymouth State. The long-stick-midfielder then recorded eight ground balls and two caused turnovers in a win over Husson. Fries also won three of his five face-off attempts on the week. 

 

 

Rookie of the Week - Jacob Blanchette, New England College (Fr., A - Weare, N.H.)

Blanchette netted eight goals and dished four assists as NEC went 1-1. He scored seven goals, gathered five ground balls and earned three assists in the team's win over Husson, and then added one goal, one assist and one ground ball in a loss to Plymouth State.

Player of the Week - Nicole Lavigne, Colby-Sawyer (Jr., C - Berlin, Vt.)

Lavigne led the Chargers with 14 points on 12 goals and a pair of assists in a 2-1 week. She scored at least three goals in each game, while adding 10 ground balls, 11 draw controls and seven caused turnovers. In a tough loss to Fitchburg State, the junior scored three times, caused four turnovers, gathered three ground balls and earned two draw controls. She followed with a six-goal, five-ground ball, three-draw, and two-caused turnover effort in a road win at Thomas. Lavigne ended the week with five points on three goals and two assists, to go along with six draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover in a close 10-8 victory at Maine Maritime. 

 

 

Defensive Player of the Week - Samantha Bickford, UMaine-Farmington (Fr., G - Oxford, Maine)

Bickford helped UMF go 1-0 in conference action on the week. The keeper played 52:40 minutes, recording eight saves and not allowing a goal as the Beavers claimed a win over Maine Maritime. 

 

 

Rookie of the Week - Mikayla Hodge, Lyndon (Jr., M - Newbury, Vt.)

Hodge finished the week with six goals, four ground balls, nine draw controls, and four caused turnovers, as Lyndon went 1-1 in conference action. The rookie netted five goals on five shots helping the Hornets earn their first win in the program's NCAA history with a victory over Green Mountain. She also tallied seven draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win. Earlier in the week, Hodge posted one goal, two ground balls, two draws, and two caused turnovers in a tough loss to undefeated league-leader, Castleton.

Player of the Week - Olivia Smith, Husson (So., P/OF - Calais, Maine)

Smith helped the Eagles go 4-0 with three shutouts after sweeping both UMaine-Farmington and Thomas in conference play. The sophomore hit .538 (7-for-13) with three scored runs and four RBI. Against UMF, she went 2-for-7 with one run and one RBI and versus Thomas, the outfielder went 5-for-6 with three RBI and two scored runs. 

 

 

Pitcher & Rookie of the Week - Jen Jones, Husson (Fr., P/OF/1B - Acton, Maine)

Jones had an impressive week on the mound and at the plate, as Husson went 4-0, sweeping both UMaine-Farmington and Thomas. One the mound, the rookie recorded a shutout victory over Thomas, scattering four hits and striking out ten. Jones also contributed offensively, going 4-for-5 with two RBI, one scored run, and two walks on the week.

Player of the Week - Zachary Disch, Thomas (Jr. - Waterville, Maine)

Disch finished the week 3-1 as the Terriers went 2-0 to extend their winning streak to eight matches. The junior took a 6-3, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles en route to a 6-3 win over Southern Maine. In a 6-3 conference win over Castleton, Disch teamed up with Ryan Chasse for a 9-7 win in No. 1 doubles and then claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.



 

 

Rookie of the Week - Cam Lynch, Colby-Sawyer (Fr. - Haverhill, Mass.)

Lynch earned two points to help the Chargers to a 9-0 win over Lyndon. The rookie began the match by teaming with Will Triebel for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles and then won his No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-1.

Track Athlete of the WeekRasheed Foster, Colby-Sawyer (Sr., Sprints - Sandy Bay, Hanover, Jamaica)

Foster continued to impress in the sprint events at Saturday's Eric Loeschner Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State, as he won the 200 meter dash in 22.17 to beat 58 other runners. He also placed third out of 68 in the 100 meter dash in 11.12 seconds and was a member of the 4x400 relay team that set a school record time of 3:28.27 to finish third. 

 

 

Field Athlete of the WeekKarl Nyholm, Colby-Sawyer (Jr., Throws - Concord, Mass.)

Nyholm shined once again in the throw events at Saturday's Eric Loeschner Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State. The junior came away with a pair of second place finishes in the discus (43.41m) and shot put (14.63) to lead Colby-Sawyer to a fifth place finish out of 23.

 

 

Rookie of the WeekDeNaugio Scarlett, Green Mountain (Fr., Jumper - Henderson, Nev.)

Scarlett posted a pair of second place finishes this week at the Mount Holyoke Spring Fling. The rookie set a new school record in the high jump with a jump of 1.88m, which also qualified him for competition in the New England Regionals. He then came up .20 meters short of winning the javelin event with a personal best throw of 35.60m.

Track Athlete of the Week - Emily Lopez, Colby-Sawyer (Sr., Multi - Lincolnville, Maine)

Lopez competed at Conn. College on Friday and came away with a New England qualifying time of 2:20.20 in the 800 meter run, placing eighth. On Saturday at Fitchburg State, the senior posted a personal record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.35 to finish third out of 15.

 

 

Field Athlete of the Week Emmani Robinson, Colby-Sawyer (Jr., Throws - Newburgh, N.Y.)

Robinson had a phenomenal performance at the Eric Loeschner Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State, as she broke her own school record of 12.99 meters in the shot put with a toss of 13.59 meters to win the event. The distance currently ranks her ninth in the nation this season. The junior also finished fourth in the discus with a mark of 31.97 meters. 

 

 

Rookie of the Week - Leah Desjardins, Husson (Fr., Sprints - Poland, Maine)

Desjardins recorded a successful week on the track helping the Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team set a new program record finishing in 51.33 seconds. The rookie also placed in the 200-meter dash, sprinting to a personal best time of 27.07 seconds for a fifth place finish.
