UMF Captures 2016 NAC East Division Field Hockey Title: Beavers Take on Wells College in Crossover
The University of Maine at Farmington field hockey team scored with 10:45 remaining in double overtime to defeat Husson University in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Championship game on Sunday.
Husson goalkeeper Anne Marie Provencal had a very busy day in net, stopping an impressive 13 shots before giving up the game-winner to UMF sophomore forward Andrea Stemm. The forward found the back of the cage after taking a shot from the top of the circle to earn her team the right to play in the 2016 NAC Championship.
In the first half, UMF outshot Husson 11-4, but it was the Eagles that had one of the best opportunities to score. Coming off back-to-back penalty corners in the 15th minute, Husson was able to work the ball to an open Arika Brochu in the circle. Brochu fired a shot on goal, but UMF goalie Patty Smith was able to make a great kick save to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
In most of regulation and the first overtime, Husson and UMaine-Farmington had numerous scoring chances, but the game remained scoreless.
In the overtimes, it was the play of UMF's Lee-Anne Greenleaf on defense that made the biggest difference. With Husson substituting regularly to keep fresh players in the seven-on-seven format, it was Greenleaf that made it difficult for the Eagles to attack the cage and setting the stage for Stemm's game winner. For her efforts Greeanleaf was named NAC East Tournament MVP.
The Crossover Championship will be played on Saturday, November 5, as the Beavers will take on the 2016 NAC West Champion, Wells College, at Castleton University with the game time tentatively scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The NAC Crossover Champion will receive an automatic berth to the 2016 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.
