UMaine-Farmington Field Hockey Takes on UNE in NCAA First Round
The NCAA Division III Field Hockey Committee announced late Sunday night the field of 24 teams that will compete in the 2016 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.
Coming off of their first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship win since 2007, the UMaine-Farmington Beavers will travel to Biddeford, Maine to face the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Champions, the Nor'easters of the University of New England. The NCAA DIII Field Hockey Championship First Round contest will be played on Wednesday, November 9, at 5:00 p.m.
UMF (13-4) advanced to the NCAA Tournament by earning a 3-2 win over Wells College in the NAC Championship. UNE (19-3) enters the national tournament following a 7-0 victory over Western New England in the CCC Championship.
The Beavers will be making their fourth trip to the national tournament, after previous experiences in 2004, 2006, and 2007. In 2004, the program reached the second round. The Nor'easters are making their third-consecutive appearance in the NCAA field, and fourth overall in program history. Each of the last two seasons, Big Blue has advanced through the first round.
The two squads have met nine times in the past, most recently in 2011, with UMF capturing the initial six contests, while UNE claimed the last three.
The winner of the first round game will take on Tufts (16-2) on Saturday. The Jumbos are making their ninth NCAA appearance, back in the field for the first time since 2013.
