Castleton's Smith Closes Career with Personal-Best Time in NCAA Cross Country Championship
Castleton men's cross country senior Grandon Smith (Newtown, Conn.) concluded his decorative four-year career with his personal-best time in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship to place 77th out of 279 runners on Saturday afternoon at Principia College.
Smith claimed a time of 25:22.98 in the eight-kilometer race to place 77th overall and 13th in New England, just 17 seconds outside of the top 50. Darin Lau from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire captured the individual title with a time of 24:03.59.

The senior closes out his career with a tremendous senior season. He took first place overall in five of eight races, including the Vermont State Meet and the North Atlantic Conference Championship for the second consecutive season. He repeated as NAC Runner of the Year before highlighting his season by placing 11th in the New England Region Championships to earn All-Region honors and become the first Spartan men's cross country runner to ever qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.
