Husson Picked to Win Fifth-Straight Softball Title in Preseason Poll

Husson University was voted the overwhelming favorite to win its fifth-straight North Atlantic Conference Softball Title in a preseason poll of the league's coaches. The Eagles received eight of nine possible first-place votes and finished with 80 total points, leading Castleton which finished second with 72 points and the other first-place nod.

The Eagles return six starters from last year's championship squad, including four all-conference honorees and the league's 2012 Rookie of the Year, Victoria Overlock. The third-baseman led the league in runs batted in as a freshman with 41 and was among the top-ten in most offensive categories including homeruns, triples, doubles, hits and runs. All-Conference Second Team pitcher, Becca McCarty, returns to the circle in 2013 after leading the NAC in ERA (2.30) and wins (18) and ranking second in strikeouts (115).

Castleton finished second in the conference standings a season ago, thanks in large part to 2012 Player of the Year Taylor Lively. As a junior Lively was a perfect 8-0 in the pitching circle during conference play, with a 0.54 ERA allowing just four earned runs in 52 innings pitched while striking out 67 batters and walking just six. Lively headlines seven starters returning for reigning Coach of the Year, Chris Chapdelaine.

Thomas, which lost in a thrilling game-seven to Husson last season, was picked to finish third, while New England College was picked fourth. The University of Maine at Farmington and Maine Maritime Academy tied to round out the top five.

The league champion will be crowned following the four-team double-elimination tournament hosted by the top seed from April 26-28. Eight teams vie for the final four spots via a single quarterfinal round held April 24.

Conference play begins March with eight of nine teams competing in doubleheader action.
