Castleton Picked to Top NAC Women's Lacrosse Standings in Preseason Poll

Castleton State College has been picked to successfully defend its North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament title in a preseason poll of the conference coaches. The Spartans received five first-place votes and 45 total points, narrowly edging Colby-Sawyer College (41) and New England College (39).

The Spartans went unblemished in conference play a year ago, earning the program's first berth in the NCAA National Tournament. Castleton returns ten starters from last year's team which went 11-7 overall. Castleton will be led offensively by the high-scoring tandem of Amanda Flodstrom and Kate Auer. Both garnered all-conference honors and ranked third and fourth in the league in goals scored, pumping in 50 and 48 respectively. All-Conference First Team honoree Sarah Clark also returns to lead the Spartan midfield after ranking among the league leaders in draw controls, caused turnovers and ground balls last season.

Colby-Sawyer is slated to finish second and garnered a single first place vote. With the loss of a trio of 2012 All-Conference honorees, the Chargers will look to a large group of talented freshmen to bolster the 13 returners to the 2013 squad. All-Conference First Team defender Amanda Murray returns to anchor the backfield, while All-Conference Second Teamer Amanda Rial will lead the midfield game.

New England College returns three all-conference selections from a year ago in Katie Roberge, Emily Bamberger and goalie Rebecca Harvey. Bamberger was among the league leaders with 71 points on 47 goals and 24 assists while Harvey led the league in saves (172) and wins (10).

The University of Maine at Farmington and Thomas College were picked to round out this year's top five.

The league champion will be crowned on April 28 at the culmination of the six-team North Atlantic Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Conference play kicks off on March 30 when Husson travels to New England College.
