New England College's Shafer Places 54th at NCAA Cross Country Championship
New England College senior Abby Shafer (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) finished in 54th place out of 279 runners at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Elsah, Illinois with a time of 21:51.5 in the six-kilometer race.
Shafer's time was 1:12.3 off of the winning time of 20:39.2, set by Khia Kurtenbach of the University of Chicago. Regionally, Coast Guard's freshman Kaitlyn Mooney, winner of the New England Regional, placed fourth with a time of 20:48.30. Runners from Amherst and Middlebury also finished in the top 10.

This was the second NCAA Championship appearance for Shafer and her best finish of the two—in 2015, she placed 143rd in a field of 280 runners.
Shafer wraps up an incredible career at NEC. A four-time North Atlantic Conference Runner of the Year, Shafer won eight of nine regular-season races throughout the year and placed 18th at the New England Regionals to qualify for her second national championship appearance.
