Husson Scores in Final Two Minutes to Win NAC Men's Soccer Title
Bangor, ME - Top-seeded Husson University defeated Castleton State College 3-2 as Zach Emeigh scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, lifting the Eagles to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Soccer Title.
Just as the match seemed destined for overtime, Andrew Austin unleashed a long throw-in towards the far post, that Castleton keeper Nate Koenemann got a hand on, deflecting it off the post. The ricochet came directly at the feet of Emeigh who buried it between five Spartans.
In an evenly played, back-and-forth match, the Eagles broke through first as Phil Frost rifled home a lofted pass from Tyler Metevier.
Castleton answered, tying the game just less than 12 minutes later. Dillon Zaengle played a free kick into the box towards the far post, and Nick Johnas finished the play off with a header.
Frost would put the Eagles ahead in the 58th minute, heading home a Mike Desmond assist.
Castleton once again had a quick answer as a Zaengle free kick was deflected off a Husson defender and in just over two minutes later.
Koenemann finished with three saves for the Spartans, while Brian Potter stopped eight shots for the Eagles.
Castleton falls to 12-6-2 overall, and will await word on any possible berth in the upcoming ECAC New England tournament.
Husson improves to 13-6-1 with the win and earns the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Eagles will learn their opponent on Monday.
