Colby-Sawyer Claims First NEAC East Tennis Crown
The Colby-Sawyer College women's tennis team defeated Castleton State College, 5-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Championship on Saturday afternoon.
In a rematch of last season's championship contest, the Chargers were able to claim their first NEAC East Championship crown in convincing fashion. Colby-Sawyer improves to 16-2 and will play a few matches in the spring in preparation of playing the NEAC West Division champion for the right to play in the NCAA tournament. The West Division champion will be decided in the spring. Castleton ends their fall season at 8-9.
The Chargers took a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping doubles play. The No. 1 team of Claire Toffey (Barnstable, Mass.) and Liz Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.) dispatched the team of Olga McIntyre (Winhall, Vt.) and Felicia West (Rutland, Vt.) 8-0. The No. 2 doubles team of Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and Donna Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) also earned an 8-0 victory over the Castleton duo of Chelsea Crehan (Essex, Conn.) and Sara Novenstern (Chappaqua, N.Y.). Charlotte Horton (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Oxana Tkachenko (Lviv, Ukraine) defeated Laure Fedorka (Temple, N.H.) and Meghan Susslin (St. Albans, Vt.) 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Colby-Sawyer, needing just two points to claim the title, clinched the title with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Lincoln, the tournament's MVP, defeated McIntyre in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at the top flight. Ramsay also won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot over West. Ramsay was named All-Tournament.
In addition to the team's accomplishments on Saturday, the Chargers also saw individual records set. Senior Claire Toffey earned a pair of doubles victories today and passed, now assistant coach, Jen LaChance '10 on the all-time doubles wins list with 55.
Freshman Donna Gordon set a single season record with 18 doubles wins surpassing the mark of 16 set by Hannah White '10 in the 2008-09 season.
