Castleton Wins Third-Straight NAC Women's Soccer Title
NEW LONDON, N.H. - Second-seeded Castleton received a pair of goals from tournament Most Valuable Player Mallory Costello, and withstood a late charge from number-one Colby-Sawyer to earn a 2-1 win in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Women's Soccer Championship.
Castleton improves to 15-4-1 and will play in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. The selection show can be seen on Monday at 1:30 pm at NCAA.com or by copy and pasting this url http://www.ncaa.com/live/player?vid=2012/563&date=2012/11/05
Costello, named 2012 NAC Women's Soccer Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, showed why she was named best in the conference by netting two goals when it mattered most. The forward scored in the 11th minute when she volleyed a corner kick from Sami Ritter (Wantage, N.J.) to put the Spartans in the lead.
She tallied another score in the 29th minute, burying the ball into the back of the net off a cross from Ericka Davis (Cambridge, Vt.). The tally gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead entering halftime.
Colby-Sawyer upped the offensive pressure over the final 45 minutes of play, and finally broek through in the 81st minute. All-Conference first-teamer Adrienne Bender (Wakefield R.I.) broke free at the top of the box and placed the ball past Castleton goalie Kaleigh Newton (Morrisville, Vt.) to slice the lead in half.
The Chargers continued to apply pressure until the final whistle, but the Spartans hung on for the 2-1 win to seal their third consecutive conference championship.
