Cailin Bullett Named NAC Woman of the Year
The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) is pleased to announce that Cailin Bullett of Colby-Sawyer College has been selected as the winner of its Woman of the Year award in a vote of the league's athletic directors. A four-year standout women's basketball player at Colby-Sawyer, Bullett will be honored at a home event during the 2013-14 academic year.
Bullett will now be put forward as the conference's representative nominee in the NCAA's Woman of the Year award.
"Cailin has certainly been a force to be reckoned with on the basketball court and I've enjoyed watching her play in the two years Colby-Sawyer has been with the NAC," said NAC Commissioner Julie Muller. "Being in the top-ten, nationwide, for assists, for three years is indicative of the kind of player Cailin is and one of the reasons the Chargers have been at the top of the NAC in Women's Basketball, winning the 2013 championship. Her performance in the classroom and her community have been equal to her athletic prowess, making her an outstanding choice for the NAC Woman of the Year and a great nominee to the NCAA Woman of the Year award."
Bullett is a four-year standout on the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team, serving as team captain in each of the past two seasons. A three-time all-conference award winner, she earned a spot on the first team in her final season in which she helped the Chargers to their first NAC title. Bullett owns the career record for assists at Colby-Sawyer with 583 and also holds the single-season (197) and single-game (13) marks as well.
"Cailin is one of the finest examples of a student-athlete that I have ever coached," said Colby-Sawyer Head Coach George Martin. "She has taken full advantage of all that Colby-Sawyer has to offer. She excelled in the classroom, found an internship which was meaningful and practical, became involved in leadership positions with organizations on campus, and still found time to be an outstanding member of the women's basketball team."
The quintessential point guard, Bullett was among the nation's best in assists per game in each of her final three seasons, ranking as high as third and never lower than sixth. In addition to her abilities as a facilitator, she also showed a deft shooting touch, and nose for the basketball, ranking sixth in program history with 1,257 points and hauling in more than 500 rebounds. She is the only player in program history to ever amass more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.
Colby-Sawyer Director of Athletics, Deb McGrath, echoed Martin's sentiments; "There is no one more deserving of this award than Cailin Bullett. She is the epitome of all that we could hope for in a student-athlete; truly committed to go the extra mile. She does not simply manage, but excels in the classroom; motivating others on her team to be better, and demands only the very best for every moment she steps onto the basketball court."
In addition to her on-court accomplishments Bullett has also proved her mettle in the classroom, achieving distinction with the Wesson Honors Program, Sawyer Fellowship Award, Wynne Jesser McGrew Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, and the Squires Award for Academic Excellence. She has also earned NAC All-Academic honors twice, as well as Dean's List honors at Colby-Sawyer.
Her leadership was not limited to captain of the basketball team, she was also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as president in 2013. Bullett also spent time working with the Fearless Project, a photography and video project by Jeff Sheng about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender athletes on high school and college sports teams. In addition she was a volunteer with the Memorial Scholarship Field Day, Students Against Drunk Driving and basketball youth camps.
