Colby-Sawyer Punches Ticket to NCAA Tournament
The Colby-Sawyer College men's tennis team won its second straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship after defeating Penn St. Abington, 8-1 late Saturday evening at the Sportime Racquet Club.
The Chargers improve to 14-8 and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. The pairings will be released on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at NCAA.com.
Colby-Sawyer took a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Nathan Taschereau and Myles Utell won 8-5 over Mike Herman and James Howell at No. 1. The No. 2 Colby-Sawyer duo of Cass McCann and Justin Pinard defeated Steven Ly and Kevin Wilkinson 8-3. The Chargers then received an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles from Dean Boodakian and Sergio Spassof who beat Mike Herman and Sam Borai.
Taschereau eased by Herman at the top flight 6-2, 6-2.
Utell gave Colby-Sawyer the match clinching point at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Howell.
Spassof (6-3, 6-4) and Dean Boodakian (6-4, 6-2) won at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Clay Allen secured Colby-Sawyer's eighth point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Abington's lone point came in the No. 3 slot after a lengthy match between McCann and Dunson. McCann took the first set 7-6 (8-6), but Dunson responded by winning the second 6-3. In the third set, the players battled back and forth before Dunson came away with a 13-11 triumph.
