NVU-Lyndon Wins First NAC East Men's Tennis Title
Portland, Maine - Top-seeded NVU-Lyndon won their first-ever NAC East Men's Tennis Championship in an exciting 5-4 victory over Thomas College.
Thomas started the match ahead, 2-1, after doubles. No. 1 Jose Afonso and Liam Gould, and No. 3 Carter Fogarty and Rajhan Munnings won their matches, 8-3 and 8-2, respectively, for the Terriers. NVU-Lyndon's second doubles pair of Quinlan Peer and Zach Falkenburg, won their match, 8-3.
Afonso and Jason Hamilton picked up wins at #1 (6-3, 6-0) and #3 (6-2, 6-3) singles for Thomas, leading to a 4-1 team score.
No. 2 Neal Mulligan (7-5, 6-4) and No. 4 Falkenburg (6-4, 6-4) then picked up wins for the Hornets, tightening the match to 4-3 overall. No. 5 Peer defeated Fogarty (6-0, 6-4) to tie the match at 4-all.
The victory was won for the Hornets by No. 6 singles Garrick Webster (6-3, 6-1), in a thrilling cap to the championship. Webster was named Tournament MVP for his efforts.
NVU-Lyndon will now face Lancaster Bible from the NEAC (West Division) for a spot in the NCAA national tournament. Date and time for the crossover match will be determined early this week.
