Husson women, Maine Maritime men win 2022 NAC Swimming & Diving Championship

BANGOR, Maine - The inaugural North Atlantic Conference Swimming & Diving championship competition concluded on Sunday night as the Maine Maritime Academy men's team and the Husson University women's team earned conference titles. 

Maine Maritime men's team earned the title with 745 points, Husson finished second with 543 points, SUNY Cobleskill came in third with 226 points, and SUNY Delhi rounded out the results with 145 points. 

Husson won the women's title with 696 points while MMA came in second with 580. The Wildcats of Cazenovia finished third with 235 points with SUNY Delhi and SUNY Cobleskill finishing fourth and fifth respectively. 

The final events started in the morning as the Eagles' relay teams swept the 400-yard medley relay. Junior Abbie Howe, sophomore Adelaide Ross, sophomore Kayla Payson, and first-year Erin Madden finished first in their final with a time of 3:52.71 while senior Steven Johnston, senior Joe Vail, first year Nathan Gilliam, and senior Dan Egan combined for a time of 3:52.71 missing the pool record by two tenths of a second. 

The other finals event that took place in the morning was the 1000-yard freestyle. With a time of 11:36.33, Payson won her fifth medal of the competition while first year Nathan Gilliam won his first thanks to a time of 10:39.23. 

Prior to the beginning of the night session; the North Atlantic Conference and the five teams honored their 20 seniors. 

The first medals of the night session were awarded to the winners of the 50-yard backstroke. In the women's event, Howe of Husson University won her second medal of the day with a 29.25 while sophomore Cameron Sprott of Maine Maritime took home the men's medal with a 27.12. 

Husson swept the 50-yard breaststroke via victories for Ross and senior Dan Egan with a time of 34.41 and 29.51, respectively. 

Senior Alexandria Caceres took home her third medal of the championships for SUNY Delhi with a 56.51 in the 100-yard free while Johnston won his fifth medal with a 48.05. 

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Ross and Vail of Husson University took home first place with a 2:45.88 and 2:22.9, respectively.

The overall conference champions each saw their team take victories in the 100-yard IM as Maddie Wing for Husson won the women's race with a 1:06.24 while junior John Markillie of MMA won the men's event with a 57.49. 

Husson Senior Ava Emery took home the women's race in the 100-yard fly with a time of 1:06.29 while SUNY Cobleskill took home their first medal of the night as junior Zach Walter won the men's race with a 55.88. 

In the final individual event of the championship, Howe took home the medal in the women's 100-yard back with a 1:04.54 while SUNY Cobleskill men won back-to-back medals thanks to a victory by senior Dan Mullen in the men's race with a 55.62. 

The NAC Swimming and Diving Championship closed with the 400-yard freestyle relay as Husson University won the women's event with a time of 3:55.83 thanks to a team of Payson, senior Erin Aucoin, Madden, and Wing. On the men's side, Maine Maritime took home the victory with a time 3:24.02 with a team of senior Patrick McEneaney, first year John Beres, first year Aidan Walls, and first year Carson Trout.
