NAC Basketball Weekly Accolades Announced (11/11/24)
WATERVILLE, Maine – The first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men’s and women’s basketball weekly accolades have been announced.
Women’s Basketball
Player of the Week:
Logan Thayne – Senior – Center – SUNY Cobleskill
Reigning NAC Player of the Year Logan Thayne (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) led Cobleskill in their season opener with a dominant performance, recording a game-high double-double of 27 points, 13 rebounds, and a blocked shot in a 71-58 triumph over Hartwick College on Friday. Thayne was highly efficient, shooting 52.9% (9-17) from the field, including a remarkable 57.1% (4-7) from three-point range, in just 24 minutes on the court.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Jessica Dow – Sophomore – Forward - UMaine-Farmington
Sophomore guard Jessica Dow (Saco, Maine) made a strong defensive impact in the Beavers' season-opening 58-53 win over Plymouth State on Saturday. She was active in the passing lanes and pressured the Panther ball-handlers, finishing with four steals—all in the fourth quarter—and a block. Her late-game defense helped the Beavers secure the comeback victory.
Rookie of the Week:
Alani Brock – Freshman – Guard - SUNY Delhi
Alani Brock (Cibolo, Texas) made an immediate impact for the Broncos during their first Delhi Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend. In her first two collegiate games, Brock was key on both ends of the court. She held the opposing team's top scorer to just 6 points in the fourth quarter and forced 8 of Delhi's 25 turnovers in only 18 minutes of play. On the second day, she earned a starting spot and delivered a standout performance, scoring a team and season-high 25 points on 52.6% shooting over 35 minutes.
Men’s Basketball
Player & Defensive Player of the Week:
Curt Heinz – Maine Maritime Academy
Senior center Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany) claims NAC Player and Defensive Player of the Week honors after posting a pair of impressive performances at the Messiah University Springhill Suites Camp Hill Tip-Off Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Heinz garnered Tournament Most Valuable Player honors after averaging 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 blocked shots, and 1.5 steals while helping the Mariners win the invitational with wins over Messiah and Mary Baldwin.
On Friday versus Messiah, the reigning NAC Defensive Player of the Year played all 40 minutes while netting 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting with 13 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and a pair of steals in a 59-51 triumph. In a three-point (72-69) victory over Mary Baldwin the following day, the 6’8 center poured in 23 points with 20 rebounds (9 offensive – 11 defensive) with five assists and a pair of rejections.
Rookie of the Week:
Tavon Rhodes – Freshman – Guard - Lesley University
Tavon Rhodes (Dorchester, Mass.) enjoyed an impressive collegiate debut, dropping a game-high 27 points for the Lynx in Friday’s opener vs. Gordon College. The shooting guard was efficient from the field going 10-for-14 from the floor with a pair of triples. He also paced Lesley with a team-high eight rebounds, adding two steals and one assist over 31 minutes of action.
