Maine Maritime Falls to #4 MIT in NCAA Tourney

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The Maine Maritime Academy women's volleyball team saw its 2024 season come to a close on Thursday evening when the Mariners lost to fourth-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 25-11, 25-14, 25-1, in the NCAA First Round at Rockwell Cage.

Maine Maritime falls to 18-11 on the season while the Engineers improve to 32-1 and advance to the NCAA Second Round to play New York University, which was a 3-1 winner over William Smith.

Maine Maritime Highlights
  • Sophomore Sydney Williams led the offense with nine kills for match-high honors while hitting for a .412 clip. She also led all student-athletes with three blocks.
  • Freshman Hannah Tate recorded 11 digs.
MIT Highlights
  • Ella Gragg tied Williams with nine kills (.368) and posted a match-best five service aces.
  • As a team, the Engineers had 13 aces in the match and 23 more kills (47) than MMA (24).
First Set
  • Despite MIT taking the opening frame by 14 points, MMA played well with a .333 attack percentage on eight kills in 18 total attempts with just two errors. The Engineers, however, hit .577 and was able to keep more balls in play with 16 digs to eight for the Mariners in the first set.
  • MIT forged ahead 12-3 but MMA clawed back in it by taking five of the next seven points to close within 14-8.
  • The Engineers responded, though, with an 11-3 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
Second Set
  • MIT held a .243-.079 attack percentage advantage to take a two-sets-to-none lead.
Third Set
  • The Mariners offense bounced back to hit .316, but the Engineers were a shade better at .520.

Maine Maritime was making its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance.
