Maine Maritime men claim top team honors at METS championships

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey – The Maine Maritime Academy men’s swimming & diving team finished in first place at the 2024 Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming & Diving Championships (METS), which concluded Sunday at the Rutgers University Werblin Aquatic Center.
 
Maine Maritime finished the METS championship with 1288 points, edging out second-place Baruch College (1266) by 22 points. Husson University was fourth with 1004 points.
 
Maine Maritime Head Swimming & Diving Coach Tony DeMuro was recognized as the METS Men’s Swimming Coach of the Meet during the presentation of individual awards at the conclusion of the championship.
 
The Metro Collegiate Championship meet served as the 2024 North Atlantic Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship, which will be scored separately with results announced this week.
 
Maine Maritime claimed the top NAC finish in four of the five individual swimming events on Sunday. 
 
James Creegan finished third in the 1650 Freestyle with a time of 17:54.42, while John Markillie claimed third place and the top NAC result in the 200 Backstroke with a mark of 2:00.42. Carson Trout finished second in the 100 Freestyle (47.59) as NAC swimmers claimed five of the top 10 places in the event. Finally, Aidan Walls was fourth in the 200 Breaststroke (2:16.77). 
 
Husson’s Nathan Gilliam was the top NAC finisher in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:13.87.
 
In the men’s 3-meter diving competition, Husson’s Spencer Bernat took third place with a score of 398.90.
 
In the night’s final event, the men’s 400 Free Relay, the Husson team of Brady Hand, Brayden Champlin, Alex Walsh, and Ryan Emerson took second-place honors with a time of 3:14.23, with Maine Maritime placing third (3:16.66).
