Mariners defeat UMaine-Farmington 3-2 in thrilling first-round matchup

CASTINE, Maine – No. 4 seed Maine Maritime Academy advance to NAC semifinals with a 3-2 thrilling win over No. 5 UMaine-Farmington in Wednesday night’s first-round tournament matchup.
The Mariners scored all three of their goals in the first half as Aiden Burr started the opening frame with a quick goal, assisted by Gabriel Toledo, at the 5:10 minute mark.
Toledo then struck the back of the net in the 13
th minute as teammate James Baur tallied the assist. Maine Maritime would end the first half up 3-0 as John-John Dickenson scored his 10 goal of the season off another Toledo assist. Both Farmington and Maine Maritime were able to get seven shots off in the first half.
Farmington was able to shutout the Mariners the remainder of the game as Maine Maritime went scoreless in the second half and only got four shots off. Garrett Gendreau got the Beavers on the board with an unassisted goal in the 66
th minute to close the gap to 3-1. Rafael Harron scored his first goal of the season in the 72
nd minute to give Farmington a spectacular late rally. However, the early damage by the Mariners was too much for the Beavers as Maine Maritime held on for the win.
Farmington’s Dylan Gagnon and Maine Maritime’s Reagan Moynihan had two saves each in goal. Toledo led the Mariners with four points, two assists, and a goal. Burr and Dickenson added a tally to their stat sheet for the night as Baur recorded an assist.
Maine Maritime will make the short drive over to Waterville, Maine to take on No. 1 seed Thomas College in Saturday’s semifinal match. Kickoff is at 6:00 PM.
