WATERVILLE, Maine – The Broncos secure their program’s first North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men’s Soccer Title in a thrilling 3-2 double overtime victory over defending champion Thomas College in Saturday afternoon’s championship game at Smith Field.
After a scoreless first half, Delhi’s Umaru Conteh notched the first goal of the game off an assist from Aidan Gaughan to give Delhi the 1-0 edge just 28 seconds into the second half.
The Terriers’ Tristan Kjartansson would find teammate Daud Abdi in the 68
th minute to score the equalizer and put Thomas on the board. Shortly after, David Ivarsson placed perfectly placed ball in the box where Cody Robinson headed in the Terriers second goal of the game to give them their first lead of the match.
With the clock ticking down, the Broncos’ Conteh slotted in an unassisted goal to tie the game with three and a half minutes left in regulation and send the game into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first 10-minute overtime, forcing a second to commence.
In the 102
nd minute of the game in second 10-minute overtime, Ryan Friar would find Gaughan would score the golden goal to send the Broncos to their first NCAA tournament appearance since becoming an official member of Division III in 2021.
The Broncos offense was led by Conteh who went 4-for-5 with shots on goal was and had four points, two goals: including the game winner. Gaughan tallied a goal and assist while Friar notched the game-winning assist.
Salvator Meloni secured the double overtime win as he logged seven saves for Delhi who saw the Thomas offense shoot 24 time with nine on goal.
With today’s victory, Delhi locks in the conference’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament, which begins next at campus sites (TBA) next Saturday. The entire national tournament field will be announced during a live selection show on NCAA.com on Monday at 11:30 AM.
