MMA's Curt Heinz Named ECAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year

DANBURY, Conn. – Maine Maritime Academy senior center Curt Heinz (Stuttgart, Germany/Abington, Stuttgart HS) has been named the 2025 ECAC Division III Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, the Eastern College Athletic Conference announced Thursday.

Heinz becomes the first Mariner in any sport to earn ECAC Player of the Year honors, adding to an already historic season. Earlier this week, he was named to the D3hoops.com All-Region 1 Second Team and is the only ECAC All-Star from a New England school this year. He joins Adam Richardson (2019) as the only Mariners to earn All-ECAC First Team recognition.

A Jostens Trophy nominee as the nation’s top Division III player, Heinz capped his career with an impressive list of accolades:
  • Two-time D3hoops All-Region
  • Two-time MMBCWA Defensive Player of the Year
  • All-State First Team & All-Defensive Team
  • Two-time NAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-NAC First Team
Statistically, Heinz averaged 20.2 points, 13.8 rebounds (No. 1 in Maine), and 5.1 assists per game. He also recorded a career-best 31 steals and 44 blocks while shooting 56.0% from the field and 77.0% from the line.

The co-captain leaves MMA as the school’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,317), blocks (188), and assists (380), and ranks second in points (1,586). His 69 career double-doubles lead all of NCAA Division III and rank third across all divisions. He also owns the nation’s best career rebounding average (14.0) and is second in D-III with three career triple-doubles.

Heinz led the Mariners to a 13-11 finish—the program’s best record in 21 years—and back-to-back NAC postseason berths for the first time since 2008–09.
