UNION, N.J. – The Husson University baseball team had its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon at the hands of No. 19 SUNY Cortland, as the Eagles fell 17-7 in the first game of the day at the Union, New Jersey regional, hosted by Kean University at the Jim Hynes Stadium.
For a second-straight day, Husson (24-16) was the first to find the scoreboard, as a walk, a hit by pitch and another free pass gave the Eagles a golden bases loaded opportunity with two outs in the first inning.
Senior Tanner Evans used strong plate discipline to score the first run for Husson, as he drew the third walk of the frame for the Eagles to get the scoring started.
Fellow senior Ryne Rametta did more damage for Husson with a two-RBI single one batter later, as the Eagles led 3-0 after the top of the first.
Cortland (30-12) struck back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the second inning to knot the game up and the Red Dragons would take the lead in the home-half of the fourth with four runs, bringing the score to 7-3.
The Red Dragons added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to further pad their lead, but graduate student Jackson Curtis would get those two runs back for Husson in the top of the seventh when he crushed a two-run homer over the left field fence to get the Eagles back to within 9-5.
Cortland continued to produce at the plate in the bottom of the inning, as it sent a grand slam out of the stadium and got another run off of a sacrifice fly to all-but put the game out of reach for the Eagles.
Sophomore Ryan Bousquet provided Husson with its final two runs of the season with the bases loaded, as he laced a single down the third base line to plate two runs and send the game into the bottom of the eighth at 14-7.
The Red Dragons would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth and retired the Eagles in order in the top of the ninth to secure the win and remain alive in the regional.
Rametta paced Husson at the plate, as he went 3-4 in his final game in the green and gold, in addition to driving in two runs.
Junior Cam Rendell, J. Curtis, sophomore Matt Holmes and Bousquet each had a base-knock, while J. Curtis and Bousquet accounted for two RBIs each.
With the loss, the 2025 season has come to an end for the Husson University baseball team.
