Kane Inducted into Central's Inaugural Hall of Fame Class
This past Saturday, Dan Kane—Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation and Head Men's Basketball Coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle—was inducted into the inaugural Hall of Fame class at Central High School in Corinth, Maine.
A standout three-sport athlete at Central, Kane was a four-year varsity starter in soccer, basketball, and baseball, earning all-conference honors in each sport. The Bradford native received All-Eastern Maine Class C recognition in soccer during both his junior and senior seasons. In basketball, he was a Maine McDonald's All-Star. In his senior year on the baseball diamond, Kane helped guide Central to a 13–3 regular-season record and the #1 seed in Class C.
After high school, Kane pursued basketball at the collegiate level, playing one season at Husson University before transferring to the University of Maine at Farmington. In his sophomore season he became a key contributor and helped lead the Beavers to the program's only men's basketball conference championship and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Kane started during both his junior and senior seasons, captaining the team in his final year. That season, he led a young squad to 16 wins while topping the North Atlantic Conference and the state of Maine in assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio. Nationally, he ranked 17th in assists per game and 27th in assist-to-turnover ratio among all NCAA Division III players. Kane also spent one season starting at fly-half for the UMF Men's Rugby Club.
Following graduation, Kane spent four seasons on legendary head coach Dick Meader's coaching staff at UMF before serving as an assistant coach at Connecticut College under Coach Tom Satran. He returned to Maine to take over as Director of Athletics and Head Men's Basketball Coach at UMPI.
Over the past eight years, Kane has transformed the Owls into one of the most competitive men's basketball programs in the state and conference. Highlights of his tenure include advancing to the conference playoffs every season, being named the 2019 Maine Men's Basketball Writers and Coaches Association Coach of the Year and surpassing 100 career wins. This past season the Owls won a program record 20 games, finished 3rd in the State of Maine Coaches Poll, and received their first-ever bid to the ECAC Tournament. The Owls also boasted a 3.5 Team GPA, receiving the NABC Team Excellence Award, while having five players honored on the NABC Honors Court.
