Elms Wins NAC Men's Basketball Title for Third Straight Time

Bangor, ME - Elms College collected their third straight NAC Championship with an 81-69 over top seeded Husson College.  Elms was paced by tournament MVP first year guard Juan Galdon (Holyoke, MA) who finished with 20 points and 3 assists.  Elms moves their record to 20-8 while Husson finishes 22-6. 

After a good early start by the host leading 16-10 at the 10:36 mark, Elms made a move with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes.  Senior David Williams (Hartford, CT) would score four in the run to put Elms up 17-16.  Husson would answer with a 5-0 run to go up 21-20 with 7:15 left in the half.  The half would end tied at 32 with the last 7:15 going back and forth.    

Elms would control much of the second half building a 7 point lead on the back of two three pointer one by Williams and the other by senior Bill Beauregard (Ware, MA) with 16:51.  Husson battled back after going down by as many as 8 with 12 minutes to play to cut the lead to 2 after a Tyler Muzzy (Greenville, ME) jumper with 8:20 to go.  Williams would again answer with a jumper to stretch the lead to 57-53 and on the next possession senior Justin Davis (Huntington, NY) would hit a three to make it 60-53 with 7:19 left in the game. 

Husson would cut it to five on three different occasions but would get no closer as Elms made their foul shots down the stretch.  Williams finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team.  Junior Nathan Hawes chipped in 11 points and 9 rebounds. 

Muzzy finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds while senior Jason Harvey had 15 points and 4 assists.  Both Muzzy and Harvey were named to the All Tournament team.  First year guard Brock Bradford (Kenduskeag, ME) had 11 points. 

Elms finished the game shooting a sizzling 54.7% from the field and 46.7% from the 3 point line.  Husson managed to shoot only 39% from the field and 35.7% from the arch and was out rebounded 36-23.

Elms moves on to the NCAA III National Tournament for the third straight year.  Elms has won 12 out of their last 14 games heading into the National Tournament.  Rounding out the All Tournament team was first year center Jose Guitian (Miami, FL) from Lasell and senior James Parker (Sandwich, MA) from Lesley.

Husson Defeats Lesley 95-78, Will Play for NAC Title

Bangor, ME- Husson College advanced to the North Atlantic Conference Championship with a 95-78 win over Lesley University.  The Eagles had 6 players in double figures led by first year guard Brock Bradford (Kenduskeag, ME) who finished with 20 points.  Husson moves to 22-5 on the season while Lesley finishes at 14-13. 

Husson led 43-28 at half on the back of a big run in the middle part of the half.  The Eagles were up 9-3 with 15:47, when the run started.  Husson would go on a 21-6 run over the next 8 minutes to lead 30-9 with 7:24 to play in the half.  Six different Eagles scored in the run.  Lesley would cut the led to 15 over the last 7 minutes. 

The Eagles kept Lesley at bay through out the second half, as Lesley cut the lead to 8 on two different occasion but Husson would answer push the lead up over ten each time Lesley got close.  Joining Bradford in double figures was first year center Martin Cleveland (Portland, ME) who finished with 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 blocks.  Senior Jason Harvey (Bucksport, ME) had 18 point, including 13-16 from the foul line while fellow senior Tyler Muzzy (Greenville, ME) chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds.  Fabian Figueroa (Bronx, NY) and Sheruad Lee (Bridgeport, CT) both had 10 points off the bench. 

Lesley place five players in double figures, led by senior James Parker (Sandwich, MA) who

finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds.  Joseph Chatman (Boston, MA), Stanley Chamblain

(Everett, MA), Mark Stevens (Las Vegas, NV), and Anthony Drayton (Roxbury, MA) all chipped in with 11 points. 

Husson finished the game shooting 52.5% while Lesley shot 39.2%.  Both teams shot well from the three point line at 47.4%.  Lesley out rebounded Husson 43-30 for the game. 

Husson will move to the championship game on Saturday, February 24th at 2:00 PM.     

ELMS DOWNS LASELL 68-64 TO ADVANCE TO (NAC) TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

BANGOR, ME, Feb. 23, 2007 - Sophomore forward Malakie Berry (Enfield, CT) netted a team-high 12 points and three players reached double figures to help the Blazers post a 68-64 win over Lasell College in the semifinals of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament on Friday night at Husson College.

With the win, Elms College (19-8) advances to its third consecutive NAC Tournament title game and will face top-seeded and host Husson College on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is 2:00 p.m. at Newman Gymnasium.

Husson punched its ticket into the championship game with a 95-79 win over Lesley University in Friday night's first semifinal.

Junior guard Randy Hite (Hartford, CT) added 11 points and freshman point guard Juan Galdon (Holyoke, MA) chipped in with 10 points for the Blazers, who led 28-27 at halftime.

Top-Seed Husson drops Castleton 93-71 in NAC Quarterfinal

Bangor, ME - The Castleton State College men's basketball team was defeated in the quarterfinal round of the North Atlantic Conference tournament by top seed Husson College 93-71. The loss ends the Spartans season at 15-11 overall. Husson was paced by Jason Harvey who netted a game-high 29 points to lead a quartet of Eagles in double-figures. Tyler Muzzy followed Harvey in the scoring column with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Husson led 49-45 at the half, but used a 44-29 second quarter to end the Spartans' season. Rich Reilly led Castleton with a team-high 24 points and five assists. Jeremy Jorgense added 20 in his final game, while Josh Howe chipped in 14. Martin Cleveland and Scott Kissinger rounded out the Eagles in double-figures with 18 and 10 respectively.

Husson improves to 21-5 on the season and will host the NAC Final Four on Friday and Saturday.

Elms Rallies Past Mount Ida in NAC Tournament Quarterfinals, 88-76

CHICOPEE, MA, Feb. 20, 2007 - Elms College sophomore forward Malakie Berry (Enfield, CT) and senior guard David Williams (Hartford, CT) netted 14 points apiece and the Blazers rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to post an 88-76 win over Mount Ida College in the quarterfinals of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men?s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at the Maguire Center.

With the win, Elms College (18-8 overall) advances to Friday night?s NAC Tournament semifinals to be hosted at Husson College in Bangor, Maine against an opponent to be determined. Mount Ida, which lost for the ninth time in its last 11 games, was eliminated from the tournament and finished its season 7-19 overall.

The Mustangs, who narrowly dropped a 79-78 decision at home to the Blazers on February 8, took a 41-37 lead at intermission following a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by sophomore guard Gino DiPietro (Westbrook, ME). The Blazers responded to tie the game at 47-47 with 15:53 remaining following a layup by senior point guard John Ancrum (Harlem, NY). Elms College then used a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to build a 59-51 lead with 10:59 remaining. The Mustangs responded with a 10-4 run in the next 2:54 to pull to within 63-61.

Ancrum and sophomore guard Joe Esile (Milford, CT) then answered with consecutive 3-pointers to build the Blazers' lead to 69-61, and Elms College punched its ticket into Friday's NAC Tournament semifinals with a game-ending 25-15 run over the final 7:53.

Ancrum finished with 13 points and a game-high seven assists, junior forward Nate Hawes (New Hope, MN) scored 12 points, senior guard Justin Davis (Huntington, NY) tallied 11 points in 19 minutes, and Berry hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds as the only player from either team to register a double-double. A total of five players reached double figures for the Blazers, who shot 50.0-percent from the field in the second half.

Senior guard Andreas Vasiliu (Newton, MA) led all scorers with 25 points and senior forward Doug Williams (Ellicot City, MD) added 22 points for the Mustangs, who had four of its seven players who appeared in the game reach double figures in the loss. Vasiliu and Williams combined for 18 of the Mustangs' 28 total field goals.

Lasell Defeats UMF in NAC Quarterfinal

Newton, MA ? The Lasers took care of business Tuesday night, leading most of the contest and winning 81-56.  Lasell sophomore Jose Guitian (Miami, FL) led with a game high 28 points along with 15 rebounds as Lasell College advances to the NAC semi-final round.  Also in double digits for the Lasers were sophomore Brad Caravoulias (Dracut, MA) with 16 and sophomore Junior Sainival (Miami, FL) who added 11. 

For Maine Farmington, junior Sean Fry (Jay, ME) led with 22 points and 10 rebounds followed by freshman Josh Tanguay (Gorham, ME) who netted ten points. Lasell College advances to the North Atlantic Conference semi-finals against Elms College at 6:00 p.m. at Husson College Friday February 23rd at 6:00 p.m.

Maine Maritime FallS To Lesley in NAC QuarterFinal

Castine, Maine - The Lynx of Lesley University came to Castine tonight and left after a very entertaining contest with a 75-71 NAC quarterfinal round win.

Joseph Chatman (Boston, MA) led the Lynx with 15 points in the winning effort, with Malcolm Andrews (Medford, MA) adding 13, and James Parker (Sandwich, MA) chipping in with 10 points.

In the losing effort, Derek DiFrederico (Millinocket, ME) had a game-high 27 points, and Brandon Hall had a double-double scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 boards. Marc McCorrison (Knox, ME) chipped in with 14 points.

With the win the Lesley University Lynx up their season record to 14-12 and advance to the NAC Semi-Finals to be played at Husson College this weekend, and with the loss the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners finish their season with a record of 12-12.

Pairings Announced for NAC Men's Basketball Championship

After completing conference play, Husson and Elms earned the top seeds in their respective divisions in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. The top four teams from each division qualify for the NAC Championship. Seeds cross over for the quarterfinal round with the top two teams in each division hosting a first round contest.  Teams are reseeded entering the semifinals.

Two-time defending champion Elms (17-8 overall, 12-3 NAC) will host East division fourth seed Mount Ida (7-18 overall, 3-11 NAC) when tournament play begins this Tuesday, February 20. The Blazers held on for a one point 79-78 victory when the two squads met the season in Boston. West second seed Lasell (15-10 overall, 12-3 NAC) will play Maine-Farmington (10-15 overall, 7-7- NAC). The Lasers only conference losses are to the tournaments top seeds, Elms and Husson.

Husson ended the regular season with a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play, 20-5 overall and as the East division top seed, the Braves will host Castleton (15-10 overall, 9-6 NAC). East division second seed Maine Maritime (12-11 overall, 8-6 NAC) will host West division third seed Lesley (13-12 overall, 9-6 NAC).

Predetermined tiebreaking procedures were used to seed teams with identical conference winning percentages. Quarterfinal games will be played at the higher seed on Tuesday, February 20. Teams are then re-seeded entering the semifinal round based on similar seeding criteria. The top seed will host both semifinal contests on Friday, February 23 at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. and the championship on Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m. for the NAC title. Game times are subject to change. The NAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
