PLAYER & ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Nick Mathieu, Colby-Sawyer (Fr. - Topsham, Maine)

Mathieu earned NAC East Division Tournament MVP honors after leading Colby-Sawyer to its seventh-straight title. The freshman won all four of his matches in tournament action. He began the day with an 8-5 doubles win with Gustav Jigrup over Castleton's top duo in the semifinals. He also recorded a win at No. 2 singles without dropping a game to help the Chargers win 6-0. In the finals, Mathieu and Jigrup once again claimed a victory at the top doubles flight over Thomas' No. 1 tandem, 8-4. Mathieu then put the Chargers' fourth point on the board by winning at the second singles flight, 6-1, 6-0.

Colby-Sawyer Captures NAC East Men's Tennis Tournament Title

For the seventh-consecutive year, Colby-Sawyer won the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division Men's Tennis Title, defeating Thomas, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Mac-Sam Tennis Center.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-10, while Thomas falls to 12-5.

The doubles sets were competitive, but the Chargers came out on top in all three, starting with the number one doubles team of Gustav Jigrup and Nick Mathieu defeating Ryan Chasse and Zachary Disch, 8-4. Both the number two doubles squad of Cam Lynch and Matt Burke and the number three doubles team of Andrew Peloquin and Alex Wright won their sets by an 8-6 count.

Mathieu, the MVP of the tournament, earned the Chargers' fourth point with a straight-set victory over Ross Munn at number two singles (6-1, 6-0). Burke, also on the All-Tournament Team, clinched the match and the title for Colby-Sawyer with a straight-set victory at number four singles (6-4, 6-1).

The NAC East All-Tournament Team also included Burke of Colby-Sawyer, Chasse and Disch of Thomas, Aaron Goldsmith of MCLA, and Quentin Barthe of Castleton.

Colby-Sawyer will go on to represent the NAC Eastern Division in the 2018 Crossover Championship with the Western Division next Sunday, May 6 at the Tri-City Tennis Club in Latham, N.Y. The winner of that contest will earn a spot into the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament.

Semifinal Match Recaps:

In the first semifinal of the North Atlantic Conference East Division Men's Tennis Tournament, Thomas defeated MCLA, 7-0, at the Mac-Sam Tennis Center.

With the victory, Thomas improves to 12-4 and advanced to the championship match Saturday afternoon. MCLA falls to 5-6.

Thomas swept the doubles sets, starting with number one doubles team Ryan Chasse and Zachary Disch defeating MCLA's Aaron Goldsmith and Jared Freeman, 8-5. Ross Munn and Jared Waterhouse took number two doubles from Matthew Bluteau and Charles Najimy, 8-1, and Kaleb Payson and Christo Naranja earned an 8-4 victory over Mohamed Mahrous and Nick Castle at number three doubles.

In singles, Disch at number three singles and Waterhouse at number four singles won their matches in straight sets without losing a game (6-0, 6-0). Munn defeated Freeman at number two singles (6-0, 6-2), and Chasse won the number one singles match over Goldsmith (6-3, 6-2).

In the second semifinal, Colby-Sawyer defeated Castleton, 6-0, to advance to Saturday afternoon's title match against Thomas. Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-10, while Castleton see its season end at 7-6.

Colby-Sawyer picked up its first point at number two doubles when Alex Wright and Andrew Peloquin defeated Trevor Hanna and Brody Wagner, 8-1. Ross Kenney and Mike White defeated Jared Wheeler and Oskar Eriksson, 8-2, at number three doubles, and Gustav Jigrup and Nick Mathieu completed the Charger doubles sweep at the number one position with an 8-5 victory over Quentin Barthe and Ryan Mulder.

Mathieu did not lose a game in winning the number two singles match in straight sets. The team match was concluded when Jigrup at number one singles and Wright at number three singles dropped just one game in each set as they were victorious in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).

*Beginning with the 2010 season, the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) has partnered with the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) in the sport of men's tennis. The NEAC will compete as associate members of the NAC in men's tennis. Members from each conference will be divided into an East and West Division for each sport, with each division holding a championship and the two divisional champions then facing off to determine the conference champion. The conference winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.
