Cambridge, Mass.- Husson exits the NCAA Division III National Softball Championship after a 7-1 loss to Eastern Nazarene. The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Champion Eagles conclude their season at 24-11.
After a scoreless first inning, Eastern Nazarene opened up a big lead with six runs in the bottom of the second. Three singles got the inning started for the Lions. Then, Elisabeth Schaffer hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Kiley Ozaki for the first run of the game. Olivia Warren and Rebecca Hayner drew walks to re-load the bases and push a run across the plate.
After a pitching change for the Eagles, Dominique Santos singled to center field and advanced to second on a throwing error, knocking in two runs while Hayner scored on the error. Santos would score the sixth run of the inning on another throwing error.
The Eagles had a chance in the top of the third inning when Arika Brochu reached first base after being hit by a pitch. She advanced to second when Bri Brochu walked, but the two runners were left stranded when Chloe Gorey flied out to left for the third out of the inning.
Santos reached on a single in the fourth, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She scored when Rebecca Ashman doubled to center field, making it a 7-0 lead for the Lions.
The Eagles got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Bri Brochu and Olivia Smith singled around two outs. Morgan Coleman reached first on a fielding error by the Lions third baseman, advancing Smith to second and scoring Bri Brochu.
Both sides were three-up, three-down in the final stanzas, leading to a 7-1 final score.
This concludes the season for Husson, while Eastern Nazarene moved on to Game 5 of double-elimination regional round.
