MMA Wins Second Straight NAC Volleyball Title

The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball tournament as they won the North Atlantic Conference Championship 3-0 over host Husson University. Maine Maritime defended their title in three games, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20.

The Mariners advanced to the championship game by turning back the University of Maine Farmington in four games, 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19.

In the first semifinal, Husson University defeated Green Mountain College three games to one. The host Eagles lost the first game 25-27 but rallied to defeat the visiting  Eagles, 25-23, 25-22, 25-15.

Farmington, Green Mountain advance in NAC Women's Volleyball First Round

Higher seeds Green Mounatin and Maine-Farmington were victorious at home today in the first round of NAC Women's Volleyball Championship. Green Mountain defeated Castleton 3-1 and will advance to meet top seed and host Husson University next Saturday. Farmington, 3-0 winners over Thomas will play second seed Maine Maritime in the other semifinal. The Championship game between the two semifinal winners will be played at 2pm.

Maine-Farmington tops Thomas in Women's Volleyball First Round, advances in NAC Tournament

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine at Farmington women's volleyball team advanced to the North Atlantic Conference semifinals today as the third-ranked Beavers topped No. 6 Thomas College 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-20) at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Jenna Rowan (Kittery, ME) collected a team-high seven kills with four service aces and four digs for the Beavers, who evened their record at 10-10 with a trip to Husson University next Saturday to face No. 2 Maine Maritime Academy in the semifinals. The other semifinal will feature No. 4 Green Mountain College versus the host and top-ranked Eagles. The Terriers finished their season at 4-21.

Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH), Danielle O'Brien (Calais, ME) and Emily Beebe (Bristol, RI) each recorded five kills in the win. Brittany Palmer (Peru, ME) paced Farmington in digs with eight, while Caitlin Flaherty (Pembroke, MA) dished out 22 assists.

Sarah Marckoon (Lamoine, ME) led Thomas with three kills and four solo blocks with Heather Holmes (West Wareham, MA) adding two kills, three digs and three assists. Marckoon and Holmes each also had an assist.

Green Mountain advances by knocking off Castleton

Green Mountain College defeated Castleton State in the quarterfinal round of the North Atlantic Conference women's volleyball tournament 3-1. The Spartans got off to a good start, leading 10-4 in the first set, and held of Green Mountain taking the first set 25-23. The Eagles responded by winning the next three sets, 25-13, 25-13, and 25-12 to finish off their cross-town rivals.

Strong serving and a balanced offensive attack helped Green Mountain advance, as the Eagles served 15 aces over 4 sets, and had 4 players with at least 5 kills on the day. Sophomores Molly Hopper and Ify Umeugo led the way with ten kills apiece, and Hopper also added 6 aces. Sophomore Jen McGuire and junior Emma Brinley-Buckley each finished with 12 assists, and Brinley-Buckley chipped in 9 kills of her own. Castleton's early run was led by junior Jamie Lemieux who served eight straight points to help the Spartans to their early lead in the first set.

Green Mountain improves to 16-4 overall, and will travel to Husson next Saturday for their semifinal match-up at 10am. Maine-Farmington will take on Maine Maritime in the other semi-final game, with the winners squaring off at 2pm for the conference championship. Castleton finishes the season at 7-14.


Husson Earns Top Seed in NAC Women's Volleyball Championship

Seeding has been announced for the North Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship which will begin first round play Saturday, November 1. Husson (12-8 overall) went undefeated in conference play to earn the top seed and a first round bye in the NAC Tournament.  The Eagles will host the semifinals and finals on Saturday, November 8.

The University of Maine Farmington (9-10 overall, 4-2 NAC) earned the third seed and will host sixth seed Thomas (4-20 overall, 1-5 NAC) on Saturday, November 1. The winner will meet defending champion Maine Maritime (16-8 overall, 5-1 NAC) in the semifinals. The Mariners earned the second seed and a first round bye.

Fifth seed Castleton (6-13 overall, 2-4 NAC) will travel to fourth seeded Green Mountain (15-4 overall, 3-3 NAC) in a first round contest on November 1. The winner will travel to top seed Husson for the first semifinal on Saturday, November 8.

The top six teams qualify for the NAC Championship. Predetermined tiebreaking procedures were used to seed teams with identical conference winning percentages. First round games will be played on Saturday, November 1 at the higher seed. Winners will advance to the semifinals and finals held at Husson University on Saturday, November 8. Semifinal game times for Saturday are 10:00 am and 12:00 p.m. with the championship at 2:00 p.m. The NAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
