Lady Mariners Win 4th Straight NAC Volleyball Championship

Castine, Maine - The Lady Mariner Volleyball team hosted the North Atlantic Conference championship match on Saturday afternoon at Margaret Smith Gymnasium. Maine Maritime defeated Husson 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 31-29) to win their 4th straight NAC Tournament Championship and now advance to the DIII National Tournament.

Tournament MVP Chelsea Ward (Homer, AK) once again dominated play, matching a career high with 27 kills while sophomore setter Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, MD) collected a career high 41 assists in the victory. Freshman middle hitter Melissa Lail (Elizabeth, CO) was outstanding in the match as well, collecting 13 kills and 10 digs. Lauren Sakahara (Bellevue, WA) had a match high 19 digs to anchor the Lady Mariner defense. Jenn Dixon and Heather Moore (Macedon, NY) were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Chelsea Ward collected 54 kills in her two matches.

Hannah Olstad (Farmington, NH) led Husson with a career high 17 kills to go along with four blocks, while Aleta Johnson (Milton, NH) added 35 assists. Kaitlyn McKay (Lincoln, RI) played well in the match, collecting 13 kills and nine digs. Hannah Olstad and Kaitlyn McKay were both named to the All-Tournament Team. With the loss the Eagles end their season at 19-6.

Husson to Meet Maine Maritime for NAC Volleyball Championship

Castine, Maine - The Lady Mariner Volleyball team hosted the North Atlantic Conference semifinals Friday evening at Margaret Smith Gymnasium. Maine Maritime and Husson each won their matches and move on to the championship game on Saturday with the winner advancing to the NCAA DIII National Tournament.

In the first semifinal match,the Lady Mariners beat the Castleton State College Spartans by the score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-3, and 25-10). Junior outside hitter Chelsea Ward (Homer, AK) dominated play, collecting a career 27 kills on 40 attempts (.625%) while sophomore setter Jennifer Dixon (Woodstock, MD) collected a game high 28 assists. Junior opposite hitter Heather Moore (Macedon, NY) played well for MMA collecting seven kills and a game high 16 digs. Lauren Sakahara (Bellevue, WA) had a match high six aces. The Lady Mariners improve to 17-9 on the season with the win.

In the second semi final match of the evening, the Eagles of Husson University defeated the Beavers from the University of Maine at Farmington by the score of 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-18, and 25-10). Hannah Olstad (Farmington, NH) led Husson with 13 kills to go along with four blocks, while Aleta Johnson (Milton, NH) added 27 assists. Kaitlyn McKay (Lincoln, RI) was outstanding in the match, collecting eight kills, five aces, and 17 digs. With the win the eagles improve to 19-5 on the year.

Maine Maritime to host 2010 NAC Women's Volleyball Championship this Weekend

Top seed Maine Maritime host the NAC Women's Volleyball Championship this weekend in Castine Maine. The Mariners will meet fourth seed Castleton in the first semifinal on Friday, November 5. Second seed Husson will face third seed University of Maine at Farmington in the second semifinal.

Castleton sophomore middle hitter Ashley Kepaa had a match-high 11 kills and five block solos alongside nine assists, four service aces and seven digs to guide the no. 4 seeded Spartans to a 3-1 victory over no. 5 seeded Green Mountain College quarterfinal round on Saturday.

Third-seeded Farmington women's volleyball team advanced to the North Atlantic Conference championship round with 3-0 first-round victory over No. 6 Johnson State Saturday at Dearborn Gymnasium. The set scores went 25-14, 25-19, 25-9.

Semifinal game times for Saturday are 6:00 pm and 8:00 p.m. with the championship on Saturday, November 6 at 12:00 p.m. The NAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Maine Maritime Earns Top Seed in NAC Women's Volleyball Championship

Three-time defending champion Maine Maritime will be the top seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship which will begin first round play Saturday, October 30. The Mariners (15-9 overall) secured the top seed after finishing 6-0 in league play and earned a first round bye in the NAC Tournament. The Mariners will host the semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6.

Tournament action will open on Saturday, October 30 when sixth seed Johnson State (3-17 overall, 1-5 NAC) travels to third seeded University of Maine at Farmington (8-12 overall, 4-2 NAC) in a first round contest. The winner will meet Husson University (18-5 overall, 5-1 NAC) in the semifinals. The Eagles earned the second seed and a first round bye.

Castleton winner (7-11 overall, 3-3 NAC) earned the fourth seed and will host Green Mountain (7-16 overall, 2-4 NAC) on Saturday, October 30. The winner will travel to top seed Maine Maritime for the first semifinal on Friday, November 5.

The top six teams qualify for the NAC Championship. Predetermined tiebreaking procedures were used to seed teams with identical conference winning percentages.

First round games will be played on Saturday, October 30 at the higher seed. Winners will advance to the semifinals held at Maine Maritime Academy on Friday, November 5. Semifinal game times for Saturday are 6:00 pm and 8:00 p.m. with the championship on Saturday, November 6 at 12:00 p.m. The NAC Champion receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
