During his time at Saint Joseph’s, McCarthy took on the role of Sports Information Director in Fall 2007 – initially on an interim basis, but dropping the interim tag the following year. He was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications in 2015, and moved up to his current role as Associate Director of Athletics for Communications and Event Management in 2020.

During his time at Saint Joseph’s, McCarthy has overseen gameday and postgame operations for 22 varsity programs, has built and maintained an exhaustive record book for all SJC sports programs, worked with PrestoSports to design a state-of-the-art athletics website, and led the effort to become one of the first NCAA Division III institutions in New England to routinely live stream sporting events.

McCarthy also developed and implemented an extensive student internship program in the sports information office, helped rebrand Saint Joseph’s athletics with a new visual identity suite, and took part in the marketing efforts surrounding the construction of the Monks’ new athletics complex. Additionally, he assisted with the addition and promotion of men’s and women’s alpine skiing and indoor and outdoor track & field. In his current role of associate director of athletics, McCarthy serves as Chair of the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame committee and has introduced the “Monks Take” podcast.

In addition to his duties at Saint Joseph’s, McCarthy is a member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and helps run the Maine College Baseball & Softball Association (MCBSA), a non-profit organization that aims to promote the achievements of DIII college baseball and softball student-athletes and teams in the state of Maine.

A native of Inster, North Dakota, McCarthy studied recreation management at the University of North Dakota and Cortland State prior to earning his Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy. He launched his career at Saint Joseph’s in 2004 when he joined the Monks’ baseball coaching staff, helping Saint Joseph’s to three NAC championships and four GNAC championships in his eight-year stint with the team.

McCarthy is a three-time Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Sports Information Director of the Year (2009, 2014, 2019). The Sports Information Director of the Year award is bestowed annually by the GNAC as part of its conference administrative awards, and is selected by a vote of the GNAC sports information directors to recognize excellence in athletics communications throughout the academic year. He is also a two-time winner of Saint Joseph’s Father John Tokaz Award, presented annually to the individual at SJC who has displayed extraordinary support to the athletic department and to student-athletes.
