Melampy, Heuler, Smith, Beatty headline NAC volleyball honorees for 2022

WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy senior Rachel Melampy earned North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year honors for the third straight season while SUNY Delhi’s Rebecca Heuler repeated as Defensive Player of the Year, as voted by the conference’s head coaches.

Maine Maritime’s Ila Smith was tabbed for Rookie of the Year honors, and Husson’s Adrienne Beatty was named the Women’s Volleyball Senior Scholar Athlete for 2022.

Tricia Carver, 10th-year head coach at Maine Maritime, was voted the Coach of the Year, earning the accolade for the fourth time in her career and for the first time since 2017.

Melampy heads into the NAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament championship match averaging a conference-leading 4.50 kills/set with a .355 hitting percentage. She has served up 30 aces (0.38/set) thus far this season, and is second on the team in total digs with 244 (3.05/set). Melampy is the first three-time Player of the Year in NAC women’s volleyball history.

Heuler is a repeat selection as Defensive Player of the Year, after charting 338 digs (3.84/set) as the Broncos prepare to host the 2022 NAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament championship match. She also recorded 29 aces (0.33/set) and was credited with 39 assists.

Smith was second on the Mariners’ roster in kills per set with 2.26, and led the conference with her .399 hitting percentage. She also led Maine Maritime at the net with 43.0 total blocks, ranked fifth among conference leaders, and turned up 19 digs over the course of the season.

Husson’s Beatty , the 2022 Women’s Volleyball Senior Scholar Athlete, is a 2022 Husson graduate with a degree in public health and healthcare administration, and is currently pursuing her Master of Science in occupational therapy. A three-year captain of the Husson volleyball team, Beatty is an eight-time selection to Husson’s President’s List, a four-time NAC All-Academic honoree, and recipient of the Patricia B. Homestead Scholarship Award. She is a member of Husson’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and the Pi Theta Epsilon scholastic honor society of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation. Within Husson Athletics, she has earned NAC weekly honors four times during her career, served as a facility attendant at both the Newman Gymnasium and the Swan Center.

Beatty has completed clinical internships with Motus Rehabilitation (Warren, Michigan); Huggins Hospital/Back Bay Rehabilitation (Wolfeboro, New Hampshire); Pine Tree Camp (Rome, Maine), and Maine Reach for the Top Therapy Services (Dover, New Hampshire).

Carver was tabbed for NAC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Mariners to a 20-3 overall record (.870), currently tied for 10th among NCAA Division III leaders in winning percentage. Under her guidance, Maine Maritime women’s volleyball went 8-0 in conference regular season matches and extended its regular season conference winning streak to 44 matches. The Mariners have not dropped a regular season conference match since October 17, 2015, in a 3-1 loss to Colby-Sawyer.

In addition to the major conference awards, 20 student-athletes were named to the All-Conference teams, and 10 individuals were named to the NAC Women’s Volleyball Sportsmanship Team. Selection to the Sportsmanship Team is reserved for those who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
